Australian Standards (AS) and International Standards (ISO)Click here to chat with a librarian

Standards Australia describes a standard as "...voluntary documents that set out specifications, procedures and guidelines that aim to ensure products, services, and systems are safe, consistent, and reliable." Staff can access standards by following the instructions in this guide.

Providing it is within the subscription coverage which Monash Health holds there will be no charge to your department. Many international standards do incur fees, as they are not included in our subscription coverage. For example ISO, IDC, IES. In these cases, you will be asked to supply a Cost Centre and manager approval for the cost of the standard.

Standards Australia are representatives of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), we are also specialists in the development and adoption of internationally-aligned standards in Australia.

International Standards develop standards so that consumers can have confidence that their products are safe, reliable and of good quality. ISO's standards on road safety, toy safety and secure medical packaging are just a few of those that help make the world a safer place

The below video provides an introduction to Standards.

Important: IT Requirements

To view and print standards, you must have File Open 'plug in' software downloaded onto your PC. Please be aware you need this in order to open and read the standards (each 'plug in' works on only one device).

This can be requested by contacting IT on ext 47255.

How to access a standard

Staff can access standards directly, by creating an individual account with SAI Global. To do this:

  1. Go to https://www.saiglobal.com/online
  2. Log in with the UserID 2205130316 and the password Welcome@123
  3. Enter your last name and location eg Smith/Clayton
  • The standard number and/or a title will help your search. All Standards have a unique identifying number and title eg AS4688.1:2018 Furniture - Fixed height chairs, Part 1: Safety and general requirements.
    • AS represents an Australian Standard. AS/NZS is an Australian Standard and New Zealand Standard and ISO is an International Standard.

You will need to contact IT Helpdesk separately to request installation of the Standards Australia FileOpen plug in on your device.

Unlocking Standards - If a standard is not part of the Monash Health subscription, it will need to be 'unlocked'. This means a payment is required to get a copy supplied.

If you need to have this standard, and you have been given appropriate permission to purchase a copy, you will need to:

  • Access your SAI Global account
  • Go to Search Standards
  • Enter document number and select specific type eg ISO Standard - from the Publisher.
  • Once processed and 'unlocked' (by Library staff) - you will then directly receive a copy of the standard along with the bill/invoice which needs to be approved/paid by you or your department.

NB: if a standard only has a 'Buy' option, please contact the Library for further assistance by emailing - library@monashhealth.org

  • Click the Request Unlock button.
  • Complete the form and submit.

Searching on SAI Global platform - To find a standard, log onto the site, you will see the search screen.

  • Search by using a standard document number: eg AS 4688.1, document title or keyword, select the Publisher from the drop down menu eg AS-Standards Australia.
  • Once located, select the Download button, you can then either view and/or print document – you cannot save as pdf file as licence/software restrictions are in place to prevent this.
