Data literacy refers to the ability to read, understand, interpret, and communicate data effectively. It involves knowing how to work with data, including collecting, analysing, and drawing meaningful conclusions from it, as well as being able to critically evaluate the quality and relevance of data sources. In a more practical sense, data literacy includes:

  • Understanding data sources: Knowing where data comes from, how it's generated, and the context around it.
  • Analysing data: Using tools and techniques to interpret data, whether through statistical methods, visualisations, or software.
  • Communicating insights: Presenting findings clearly, whether in written reports, presentations, or visual formats like charts and graphs.
  • Ethical considerations: Recognising biases, privacy issues, and ethical responsibilities when working with data.
  • Data-driven decision-making: Using data insights to guide choices and strategies in various contexts.
