Funding requirements
Each funder of medical research will have applicable codes and standards to ensure the research they fund is conducted according to appropriate ethical, legal and professional frameworks. Examples from the NHMRC are listed below. Research projects must adhere to responsible research practices and researchers should check the guidelines stipulated by their funding body.

Open Access requirements
Many funders will also require that research outputs from supported research are made openly accessible. It is essential that you check these policies before submitting work for publication.
Submitting your work to the Monash Health Research Repository (MHRR) will satisfy NHMRC and ARC funding requirements regarding peer-reviewed papers being made openly accessible after publication.

Early-career researcher grants
Many funding agencies offer specific grants to support early-career researchers. Generally, "early-career researchers" are those in the first ~8 years of their research career and/or clinical practice -- however, this definition varies between funding agencies, so always check each grant's eligibility criteria.

Budgets for clinical research
Draft a budget based on the information in your protocol. Keep in mind costs from both categories:

Tip: Be mindful of the potential for unexpected or "hidden" costs, e.g. unscheduled clinic visits or a delayed start.
Note regarding grants
Grant guidelines typically specify which costs the funds can be used against. For instance, in some cases grant funds may be used to purchase equipment required for the study but not to cover journal publishing fees.
