Why conduct a literature search?

We recommend conducting a literature search to help with planning and preparing for your quality improvement project. Searching the literature is a way to find the best available external evidence, to complement the local data that you gather.

A literature search can :

  • identify or confirm current best practice
  • generate ideas about different approaches for tackling the same problem or project
  • offer insights into the successes and challenges faced by other health services that have implemented similar initiatives
  • provide relevant external data to support a business case, e.g. Project XYZ resulted in reduced LOS and improved consumer feedback

Online literature searching guidance

If you wish to conduct your own literature search, we recommend attending one of the Library's regular webinars on literature searching, or watching the recording on Latte. You can also consult our Literature Searching Guide.

REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) is a secure web application for building, sending, and managing online surveys. REDCap can be used to collect any type of data, however, it is specifically geared to support data capture for research studies. It may also be used to securely collect data used in quality improvement projects.

REDCap allows for form customisation with HTML and CSS, survey logic, file attachment, data export and import, collaboration with external researchers, and sending email and text alerts.

Unlike, Excel or Survey Monkey, REDCap meets the requirements for security, privacy, data quality, and data auditing and should be used when conducting health research. Many ethics committees are aware of and approve of the use of REDCap.

Access

To access REDCap, or to find more information about accessing REDCap at Monash Health, please contact Simon Basterfield: simon.basterfield@monashhealth.org

The Library facilitates the Monash Health REDCap User Group. It is an open group for REDCap users across Monash Health to exchange knowledge, troubleshoot with peers using REDCap for hospital-based research, and contribute to a network of Monash Health researchers.

The group meets virtually on the first Thursday of every month from 12:30pm - 1pm. Contact the Library team for more information, or visit the group's SharePoint site to access curated resources and the Teams meeting link.

Monash Health Research Repository

If you intend to publish or otherwise present the results of your QI project, ensure that you submit it to the Monash Health Research Repository (MHRR).

The MHRR tracks, organises, and promotes the work of Monash Health employees and hospital-based researchers. The repository collects a wide range of outputs, including conference posters and abstracts, journal articles, books and book chapters, theses and dissertations. It is publicly accessible to a global audience.

See our Research Repository user guide for information on setting up a researcher profile, submitting your work, and advanced searching.
