This month the National COVID-19 Clinical Evidence Taskforce published a number of paediatric updates, such as new flowcharts for in-hospital care. The Auditor-General Report on the national COVID-19 vaccine rollout found that it was “partly effective” – with issues such as an underestimation of “the complexity of administering in-reach services to the aged care and disability sectors” – and recommends a more comprehensive review. Meanwhile, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will overhaul its structure and systems following a review of its own COVID-19 response.

Selected COVID-19 articles:

• Despite an initial complete recovery from olfactory dysfunction – a common symptom of COVID-19 – almost one quarter of participants in this Danish study reported recurring dysfunction. 
   
• A review of recent literature discusses the pandemic’s impact on the incidence and severity of eating disorder symptoms, noting an especially high risk for children and adolescents, and the continuing importance of in-person assessment.
• Vaccinations prevented up to 19.8 million deaths to the end of 2021, according to mathematical modelling based on reported COVID-19 deaths and excess deaths. 
  
  
• Roughly 1 in 8 adults is likely to experience long-term symptoms, according to a recently published observational cohort study from the Netherlands. However, the study period was before mass vaccination and pre-Omicron.
   
• A randomised trial of metformin, ivermectin, and fluvoxamine found that none were effective in preventing hypoxemia, an ED visit, hospitalisation, or death from COVID-19.
