Our new guide on cognitive bias, diagnostic error and clinical reasoning is now online. The guide provides advice on clinical reasoning and systems of thinking (intuitive and analytical), as well as a list of key strategies to mitigate cognitive bias.

Health Research Writing Masterclass – a practical, interactive webinar on scientific writing – is available free to Monash Health employees. It runs on Tuesday, 7th September at 5pm AEST.

We are pleased to introduce our new evidence-based practice webinar, Critical appraisal of literature! We provide an overview of key principles and practical skills, with exercises using real clinical papers and checklists. It runs once a month, starting Thursday, 16th September at 4:30pm.

In support of Red Nose Day on 13th August, we shared safe sleeping resources and a range of relevant resources from our collection. Our libraries, which continue to be accessible during lockdown, also featured physical resource displays.

Faced with ongoing outbreaks and lockdowns through August, we have seen continued debate about the vaccine rollout and Australia’s COVID-19 management plan. Updated epidemiological modelling from the Doherty Institute is expected imminently.

Globally, the number of new reported cases may be plateauing – aided by increasing vaccination coverage. However, The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners recently noted regional disparities in vaccination rates with research from the US indicating that vaccine incentives such as state-wide lotteries may not be effective. The conflict in Afghanistan appears to have worsened the country’s COVID-19 situation, with reports of plunging vaccination rates

The latest report from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was released in August. What can we do in healthcare? A new article in The Medical Journal of Australia looks at the use of renewable energy in Australian hospitals. An earlier article from Yale Sustainability explains Net Zero Healthcare, while this article discusses how health professionals such as podiatrists can model positive environmental practices.

How do academic scientists feel about online and in-person conferences during COVID? Primary Research Group Inc. sought to answer this and other questions in their recently published report. Scholars from the UK and Ireland were more likely to feel unsafe attending in person.

Ahead of a regulatory change, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has encouraged users of nicotine vaping products to make an appointment with their GP about smoking cessation. From October, consumers will need a valid prescription to order nicotine vaping products from overseas.
